Are your fire doors safe? 5 Important Steps you Need to Check

Fire-safety

The first line of defense is a fire door. It is a type of door designed to endure prolonged direct fire exposure without enabling the flames to spread to the other side of the door. Fire doors generally contain fires, act as a heat shield, and protect emergency exits and shelters. Check that your fire doors are in proper functioning order now. Every six months, you should perform a check (or three for busier buildings).

Here’s what you should look for to keep safe and compliant…

1. Certification

For fire doors, certification is required. So, keep an eye out for a certification sticker or plug. This is normally located on the top or side of the door. Make sure all of the door’s hinges, latches, and locks are labeled as well If your fire door is not certified, you should notify your health and safety manager or installation.

2. Gaps

The gap between the fire door’s top and the frame should be between 2-4mm. You can test this using a coin, which is around 3mm wide. When the door is closed, the gap between the bottom of the door and its frame should be no more than 8mm. If you can see light from behind the door, the gap is definitely too large. After you’ve verified the gaps, you should double-check your seals.

3. Seals

A fire door’s seals keep fire and smoke from spreading through gaps. In the event of a fire, the seals expand and close the gaps around the door. This keeps the fire at bay long enough for people to leave. Some doors necessitate smoke sealing. These seals should be installed at the top of the door frame and on all sides. Also, ensure there are no cracks or holes in these seals that could prevent them from working properly.

4. Hinges

A fire door should have at least three CE-marked hinges securely fastened with screws. When you open the door, ensure none of the screws are missing or broken.

5. Closing

Ensure your fire door always closes securely, or it will be useless if a fire breaks out. Never leave a fire door stuck open; inspect it for any obstacles that may keep it from shutting. You may ensure that it closes properly by opening and closing the door. It should automatically close onto the latch without the need for any force. It should also not stick to the floor or the frame as it closes.
